Other complaints
Acupuncture for other complaints
Not all health complaints fit within one clear group. Dizziness, tinnitus, restless legs, high blood pressure and problems with weight management, for example, have very different causes and each call for their own approach.
Chinese medicine therefore does not try to place these complaints under one common pattern. For each complaint we look separately at the possible cause, the way in which the complaints present and any other physical or mental symptoms.
On this page you will find an overview of complaints that do not fall within the other categories of this website. The individual complaint pages describe in more detail what acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can mean and how the complaint in question is assessed within Chinese medicine.
Complaints
Dizziness
Dizziness can present as a light feeling in the head, a spinning sensation, an unsteady feeling when walking or the feeling that you or your surroundings are moving. The possible causes vary widely and the type of dizziness provides important information about what may be going on.
Chinese medicine looks among other things at the character of the dizziness, when it occurs and the complaints that go with it, such as nausea, headache, fatigue or tinnitus.
Tinnitus
With tinnitus you hear sound without an external sound source being present. This can be a beep, hiss, hum or buzz, for example. The sound can be continuously present or vary and, in some people, can affect sleep, concentration and daily functioning.
Tinnitus can have various causes. Chinese medicine therefore looks not only at the tinnitus itself, but also at its onset, the type of sound and any other complaints.
Restless legs syndrome
With restless legs syndrome a strong urge to move the legs arises, usually together with an unpleasant, tingling, pulling or restless sensation. The complaints occur mainly during rest, are often stronger in the evening or at night and usually decrease temporarily with movement.
Because restless legs can have various causes and contributing factors, a treatment looks at the overall picture of complaints and at any other health problems.
High blood pressure
Raised blood pressure usually causes few or no complaints, but in the longer term it increases the risk of, among other things, cardiovascular disease. That is why monitoring blood pressure and conventional medical supervision are important.
With high blood pressure, acupuncture can only be used as a complementary treatment. Complaints such as stress, tension or sleep problems can also be considered when these are present at the same time.
Weight management
Weight is influenced by many different factors, including diet, exercise, sleep, energy expenditure, hormones, medication and genetic predisposition. That is why there is no acupuncture or herbal treatment that produces weight loss on its own.
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can, however, be used as support within a broader approach, for example when complaints such as stress, appetite, digestive problems or sleep problems play a role.
What can acupuncture do?
Because the complaints on this page differ greatly from one another, there is no general acupuncture treatment that applies to this whole group. For each complaint we look at:
- the nature and possible cause of the complaint;
- the way in which the complaint presents in your case;
- factors that improve or worsen the complaints;
- any other physical or mental complaints;
- the underlying TCM pattern.
The treatment of dizziness can therefore be very different from that of tinnitus, restless legs or complaints related to weight management. On the individual complaint pages you can read in more detail what acupuncture can mean for each specific complaint.
What can Chinese herbal medicine do?
Chinese herbal medicine is likewise not chosen on the basis of the category "other complaints". Herbs are tailored to the specific complaint and the underlying TCM pattern.
With dizziness, for example, very different bodily functions and patterns can be involved than with restless legs or tinnitus. A general list of treatment principles on this page would therefore say little about which treatment is actually appropriate.
On the individual complaint pages you can read what role Chinese herbal medicine can play with each specific complaint and how herbs are tailored to the personal picture of complaints.
How does Chinese medicine view these complaints?
Within Chinese medicine a treatment is not based only on the name of a complaint or a Western diagnosis. We look at the overall pattern of complaints and symptoms and at the bodily functions that, according to TCM, are involved.
Dizziness can be explained within Chinese medicine in a completely different way than tinnitus, restless legs or problems with weight management. Even two people with the same complaint can have different underlying patterns.
A recognisable combination of complaints and symptoms is called a TCM pattern. The pattern helps determine which treatment principles, acupuncture points and, where relevant, herbs are chosen.
Because the complaints on this page differ greatly in nature, no general TCM patterns are described here. On the individual complaint pages you can read which organ systems, bodily functions and patterns can be relevant for that specific complaint.
Prognosis
The course of treatment also differs greatly between the complaints on this page. The prognosis depends among other things on the specific complaint, the cause, the severity, how long the complaints have been present and your personal situation.
It is therefore not useful to give one general treatment duration or frequency for these varied complaints. On the individual complaint pages you can read in more detail what you can expect from a course of treatment for that specific complaint.
